Tokyo’s STAP Sigh Boys has announced a new album, Universe, out October 31 via BEST PLAY/ VIVID SOUND. The 14-track record stretches his blend of city pop / outsider disco towards the cosmos, balancing Star Trek TNG themes with hard dancefloor-ready energy. The lead singles “Uchu Umare”, “Light(n)ing” and “Déjà Vu” have the vibe of something born from a parallel dimension where Daft Punk didn’t release that lame album between Discovery and RAM.

本作では、リードシングル3曲がアルバムのテーマ性を象徴している。英語と日本語を交えた「Déjà Vu」は、まるでアース・ウィンド＆ファイアが、降霊会で悪夢を見ているようなサウンド。「Light(n)ing」は、Discovery期のダフト・パンクを思わせるグリッター感と、ハイボルテージなディスコサウンドにのせたラブソング。「君たちは宇宙生まれ」は、クラシックなディスコの高揚感と宇宙カルトのプロパガンダが融合したアドレナリン全開の1曲となっている。

The 14-track talkbox-heavy project cements his reputation for threading city pop gloss, outsider disco, and cosmic philosophy into one heady mix. Three lead singles chart the record’s thematic scope. The bilingual (English/Japanese) “Déjà Vu”, sounding like Earth, Wind & Fire having a bad trip at a séance, “Light(n)ing” – a glittering, highvoltage Discovery-era Daft Punk-styled hard disco love song, and 君たちは宇宙生まれ (All of You Were Born of the Universe), an adrenaline-inducing classic disco space-cult propaganda song. Beyond its main singles, Universe darts between the playful and the profound. Tracks like “前澤, Take Me to the Moon” (Maezawa, Take Me to the Moon) and “おはよう, Sun God” (Ohayō, Sun God) splice contemporary pop culture with mythological grandeur, while “Empathy (共感放送!)” [Empathy – Empathetic Broadcast!] and “If You Were Here” distill the band’s more direct, emotional side. “The Doldrums”, on the other hand, is a “John Coltrane doing amphetamines with Thundercat and Scatman John” level bizarre neo-jazz detour. The result is a record that folds humour, science, romance, magic, space and pantheism into a widescreen cinematic vision of disco-fueled transcendence.

令和六年六月六日、STAP Sigh Boysのトークボックス・エフェクターから放たれた一音が、宇宙全体に響く重力子の弦と完全に同じ周波数で振動し、来世・宇宙・現世を結ぶポータルを開いた。その瞬間、彼の魂は三つの世界に分かたれてしまった。
それ以来、彼の作品はディスコ、実験的ポップ、SF的ストーリーテリングのあいだを行き来し、東京の音楽シーンの中で独自のポジションを築いている。
On the 6th day of the 6th month in Reiwa 6 (6/6/6 in the Japanese calendar), a note emanating from STAP Sigh Boy’s Talkbox vibrated at exactly the same frequency as graviton strings across the universe, opening a portal connecting the afterlife, the universe and the earthly realm, splitting his spirt between all three worlds. Since then, his work has spun between disco, experimental pop, and sci-fi storytelling, carving out a singular niche place within Tokyo’s music scene, seeing him championed by some of Japan’s leading musicians to become one of the country’s breakout artists of 2025.
